The Great Winter

The ancient Norse peoples had a great term, "fimbulvintr". It was the cold season that ushered in the death of the gods and the end of the world. This was very nearly an arctic culture, you see, and for them, when winter came and the sun went away for months at a time, there was no way of knowing if it would ever come back. It always had before, but what did that prove? They didn't understand, didn't know any better, and there was always that fear that maybe this time, maybe this year, the winter would last forever.

But of course it never did. It never does. They didn't know any better, but we do. When things are at their darkest, and there's no end in sight, all you can do is hunker down, and steel yourself.

Hold fast. You'll get through this fimbulvintr yet.
